Course Motivation

History of Medical Offices

Medical offices are a newer feature to the healthcare field, arriving only in the last century as people began to move to areas where hospitals were not conveniently located.  As people began to spread out and to establish their own homes, they needed to have facilities for healthcare, and the home practice model was not as effective.

Though many doctors continue to provide home visits, this practice was not as possible in developing cities where the populations boomed. In a place where there were many patients for few doctors, it became necessary to create a medical office arrangement.

A doctor would see patients out of their home or out of a separate office building, helping to provide both emergent and preventative care to patients of all ages.

In modern times, medical offices offer patients a variety of services, within one location. This is much more convenient, and it allows medical specialties to thrive.

Because different kinds of doctors can have their own medical office setting, they are able to create a more individualized treatment program for a specific group of patients.

Today, many specialists will also share medical office space with others who have similar or complementary medical professions. This allows patients to have one place in which they can receive care, without having to drive to multiple offices.

While medical offices do not typically have the resources to handle emergencies, they are equipped to stabilize patients if something should happen during a regular visit. If this is the case, the patient will then be transferred to the nearest available hospital.

Medical offices can be located in a variety of settings, including within a hospital, as a freestanding building, or in a complex with other medical offices of different specialties.
