Course Description

This course on Basic English Speaking Skills is a combination of both vocabulary and language and includes picture illustrations, external resources, and netlinks to sound and video demonstrations that accompany many of the concepts studied and aid in the learning process. 

Over 900 frequently used English vocabulary words are taught and each lesson is broken down to include basic English language concepts to promote proper sentence development. All material is supported by several examples and exercises.

Lesson 1: To Be: Present Tense

The purpose of this lesson will be to teach how to read/write sentences in present tense.  It will also teach how to identify people by name, talk about ownership, common objects, and family relationships through various exercises.

Lesson 2: To Be: Present Tense: Negative Form

This lesson will review how to give/accept/decline invitations, talk about events and places to visit. 

Lesson 3: Present Tense: Question Form

This lesson will review how to introduce people, talk about jobs, and about social relationships.

Lesson 4: To Be: Past Tense

This lesson will review how to start conversations.

Lesson 5: To Be: Past Tense Negative Form

This lesson will teach how to count, the numbers 1-10, and food & drink.

Lesson 6: To Be: Past Tense Question Form

This lesson will teach how to form questions, open questions, asking for clairification, and occupations.

Lesson 7: Exceptional Uses with the Verb to Be

This lesson will review topics such as asking the price, talking about travel, days and months, money, numbers 11-20, transportation

Lesson 8: Adjectives

This lesson will review food items, agreeing and disagreeing language, asking/giving opinions

Lesson 9: To Have: Present Tense

This lesson will review greetings/farewells, talking about health, parts of the body, common ailments

Lesson 10: To Have: Present Tense, Negative Form

This lesson will review addresses and locations, numbers over 20.

Lesson 11: To Have: Present Tense Question Form

This lesson will review buying goods, asking about health, and musical instruments.

Lesson 12: The Simple Present Tense

This lesson will review common places, colors, and ordinal numbers.

Lesson 13: The Simple Present Tense: Negative Form

This lesson will review using the telephone and basic telephone language.

Lesson 14: The Simple Present Tense: Question Form

This lesson will review personalities, talking about time, and making appointments.

Lesson 15: Possessive Prounouns

This lesson will review some articles of clothing, shoes, etc.

By successfully completing this course, students will be able to:
  • Demonstrate the proper usage of the verb "to be," present tense and past tense.
  • Demonstrate proper use of adjectives.
  • Demonstrate the proper usage of the verb "to have," present tense and past tense.
  • Identify simple present tense.
  • Identify possessive pronouns.
  • Demonstrate asking questions.
  • Recognize the simple past tense.
  • Recognize prepositions in and on.
  • Identify the prepositions "at" and "to".
  • Demonstrate correct usage of "there is" and "there are," present tense and past tense
  • Identify the prepositions "from" and "of".
  • Recognize the verb "will," simple future tense.
  • Demonstrate correct usage of nouns, singular and plural.
  • Summarize basic vocabulary review.
  • Demonstrate mastery of lesson content at levels of 70% or higher.
