The course offers no guarantees that the student will gain psychic powers, but instead, will suggest ways in which the serious student of the paranormal can gain an increased awareness and expanded consciousness with practice and meditation. The student is encouraged to access as many of these sources as possible to develop a wide-ranging view of the subject matter.

The mysteries of the paranormal:

For this course, it is recommended that the student sincerely undertake to read and explore every available resource to become well-rounded and grounded in the decision to become involved in paranormal investigations. Although periodically in and out of favor, the study of paranormal activity is becoming less a mystery, as an increasing number of "ghost-busting" organizations form around the world.

Why is this field experiencing such a renewed surge of interest? Many believe humanity is currently in an era of major transformation.

We are all seeking answers and hope, and the current rush to uncover and understand the paranormal is endemic. However, involving oneself in this field is a serious consideration that must not be taken lightly. This course will attempt to provoke responsible and mature thinking with regard to paranormal phenomena, beyond simple "ghost-busting."

Anyone who has read Michael Newton's hypnosis studies on the life in between lives on earth is aware that there is a vast and dynamic "alive" presence beyond what we are able to perceive. This physical existence is apparently but a drop in the bucket of intelligent experience in the universe, albeit an important one.

Age old questions:

As humans, we have always probed for answers as to whether our present state of consciousness ends abruptly, leaving us with nothingness at the time of death, or whether the personality, with all of its intricate characteristics, might live on. Religions for time eternal have posed the question and have even professed to answer it: Is there an afterlife? Contemplating our mortality, we wonder if we will have the chance to come back and try again. Where do we go when we die? Will we ever see our loved ones again? Is this all there is to me? Do my departed loved ones know what I am doing every day?

There is no study that can begin to answer these questions with any real authority. It is only in the individual experience of each of us that determines what is true, and truth is quite subjective. However, enough people have experienced paranormal activity that we know there is something beyond the physical.

Why do we care?

This is a much deeper question than it appears on its face. We care for many reasons, not the least of which is our programmed need to survive. Another reason is the desire to see those who have left this plane and to believe that they live on. Yet another is to break into a mysterious realm that only a relatively few people have managed to crack, but one that everyone wonders about. The paranormal is an exciting frontier of exploration that still awaits our understanding.

Furthering the research into this fascinating field of study is an honorable and important endeavor. We all want to understand what, so far, has not been explainable. Therefore, aside from the exciting aspect of finding ghostly evidence, we may be providing a great service to humanity by furthering the study of the paranormal. After all, would our lives not be a bit easier if we knew what to expect after death?

Television:

There has been considerable exposure recently on entertainment television regarding paranormal investigative teams who respond to calls from people who suspect their homes or buildings are haunted. These shows make the process seem exciting and whenever possible, frightening. However, to "bust" ghosts based on what we see on these shows is not necessarily a valid motive for wanting to investigate the paranormal nor is the simple desire to get frightened or appear on television. Investigating the paranormal involves elimination of every rational possibility, a sound knowledge of science, and a cool head.

Respect:

Allison DuBois, a well known medium, feels that those who have passed on depend upon us for their joy, and that "we are their heaven." If there is such a thing as an afterlife, to stab into it carelessly without respect or knowledge is foolhardy, just as it would be if an alien being were to jump into our culture and behave unpredictably or make false assumptions about us. Watching the recent ghost-busting television shows reminds us that there is more to an investigation than confronting and challenging a lingering spirit. As investigators of the paranormal, we may have an excellent opportunity to help those who may feel trapped or stuck between realms.

It is important, then, to understand not only what has already been studied about the world beyond this, but to be introspective and respectful as you explore.

It is also essential that we be willing to be of assistance to those who may need us in the realms beyond and to be mindful of their reasons for making themselves known. Remember, the domain of spirits is one that we all, more than likely, will inhabit one day. When dealing with other realms, it seems honorable to assume the same sense of stewardship that we have toward the earth – the consciousness and willingness to show respect and assistance toward what we may not understand.

Is paranormal investigation right for you?

Most people who want to investigate the paranormal would like to enhance their sensitivity to the vibrations of other realms. While some are more sensitive than others, a true medium is able to perceive messages and information from the world of spirit, and these sensitivities can be heightened with practice.

As you develop the skills of mediumship, you may be faced with tasks you did not expect. Contacting those who have gone on is, by all accounts, generally a pleasant and positive experience. However, the spiritual world, in its denser levels, can occasionally be just as brutal and confusing as our own physical world. Be sure you are ready to face these challenges, whatever they might be.

Examine your motives.

In addition to a desire to further the body of research into this field, perhaps it is important to contact those who have passed in order to soothe our grief and to reassure ourselves that life continues beyond the earthly body. Whatever motivates your particular interest in this field, it is advisable to be clear about it. Because "like attracts like," if your motives are connected with fear, anger, the need for recognition, or other less desirable emotions, it is possible to attract into your life some energies which are not welcome.

Current ghost-busting television shows have encouraged thousands of people to explore the field of paranormal investigation. However, as the TAPS people demonstrate, they have kept their day-jobs as plumbers, and they are only a small minority of investigators who have been tapped for a television series.

Further, most organized societies and associations of paranormal study around the country do not charge for the services they provide. Spiritual work deals with a different currency than that of our dollars and, as most mediums might confirm, it not necessarily appropriate to charge for your services beyond the basic costs of the investigation. Donations are likely to be offered, but should not be expected. Therefore, a major consideration is whether it makes sense to take time from a paying occupation to pursue this interest. Paranormal investigations must be performed as an act of honor, concern, and goodwill as opposed to a service one performs for profit.
