Course Description

The difference between learning the basics of teaching versus going into a classroom untrained is like the difference between night and day.  Whether for business or pleasure, English is the main go-to language for international communication. International businesses are increasingly changing over to English for their day-to-day operations and immigrants to English-speaking countries need English reading and writing skills for work and to become full members of society.

Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) is a specialized skill in the field of education. ESL teaching is often done by teachers who don't necessarily have advanced degrees and/or by volunteers, but the idea that a native speaker of English can easily be a teacher without any training is simply not true. Even experienced and certified teachers from other fields will benefit from knowing the unique challenges of teaching grammar and learning the special skills in teaching ESL.

This course features lessons on methodology and other related subjects that teachers need to know before they enter a classroom. This course focuses on teaching grammar and provides detailed classroom techniques to help make grammar understandable by all students. While we will focus primarily on beginner and intermediate ESL students, the techniques and tips can be applied to any class of any level. Learning and understanding the basics of teaching English before going into a classroom will give you the confidence needed to help others learn as well as give your students the best chance to succeed.
